An exotic and widespread species in lowland and upland streams in Hong Kong.
Commonly sold as pets and feeder fish in Tung Choi Street, it has made its way into multitudes of streams and reservoirs. It can also tolerate brackish water.
Identification: "One of the most popular aquarium fishes but has a stockier body and variable colour forms. The male generally has brighter body colour with black spots on its body while female has 2 black dots at the base of caudal fin" (AFCD).
AFCD: Found in large numbers in many local freshwater streams, rivers and ponds
Personal experience: Swims in a mini shoal, often mixed with other invasives like guppies and mosquito fish.
